Cannot generate SSPI context in SQL Server – for me, it’s triggered by Citrix Access Gateway

I have an intermittent issue in SQL Server Management Studio when connecting to a SQL Server on my work LAN from a desktop on the same LAN. SSME intermittently cracks it and gives me a “Cannot generate SSPI context” message box, which prevents connection.

Google tells me that a lot of people receive this message occasionally, but none of the fixes I found worked for me.

Anyway, as it turns out, I only ever receive the error when I have a Citrix Access Gateway connection up. So I’m posting this blog entry in the hope that someday it saves someone some time. Disconnect from CAG when you don’t actively need it.
